Wendell Smoot
President
Wendell currently serves as a Program Management Specialist with the Department of the Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control. Wendell is originally from Fort Worth, Texas, and a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan. He joined the Air Force after graduating from high school and spent twenty-two years serving in the Air Force with tours in Thailand, England, Florida and Germany. He achieved his Bachelors in Administrative Management with the University of Maryland, European Division, and his Master’s degree in Administrative Management with Bowie State University through the G.I. Bill education program. He has many interests and hobbies, including volunteering as a mediator for Conflict Resolution Center Montgomery County, District Court of MD and the Department of the Treasury, and recruiting for the Workforce Recruitment Program, a government program sponsored by the Department of Labor and Department of Defense that recruits disabled college students for government summer and permanent jobs. Wendell is also a former marathon runner, with two marathons under his belt, along with a number of 10 milers, 10ks and other races and he recently took up learning to play the piano. Wendell has been an Airbnb host since 2011 and a part-time tax preparer for the past sixteen years with H&R Block (Block Advisors). Wendell resides with his wife, Johanna, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, and they have two adult daughters, Cassandra and Sarah-Amina. Wendell and his wife travel frequently to Texas to visit his mother and family, also to Germany to visit their daughter, Sarah-Amina and his wife’s family and friends.
Dan Max
Vice President
Dan is a business lawyer at King & Spalding LLP, a large international law firm. He has 25-plus years of experience in counseling clients on their most important, strategic and complex transactions and corporate matters, including mergers, acquisitions, financings and joint ventures. Dan also has a breadth of experience advising clients in connection with and negotiating commercial disputes, including disputes and litigations concerning squeeze-out transactions, deadlock situations, indemnification claims and employee matters. Dan’s clients include private companies, public companies, buyers, sellers, boards of directors, executives and entrepreneurs, with an emphasis in the technology and government contracting industries. Dan grew up in New York and holds a B.A. in History from Columbia University and a J.D. from Fordham Law. Dan has served as a lecturer for the Tech Council of Maryland at TCM’s government contracting academy and he has volunteered for “Wills on Wheels”, in addition to other local volunteer activities. Dan has now lived in Montgomery County for over 20 years with his wife Sandy. They have 3 wonderful kids. Outside of work, Dan loves nothing more than a BBQ, spending quality time with family and close friends.
Devi Vat-Ho
Vice President
Devi joined the USA for UNHCR as their Manager of Mid-level Gifts. She manages their mid-level engagement program. For over seventeen years she has had the pleasure of working for several non-profit and public sector entities, ranging from small, grassroots nonprofits to large universities and global organizations. Her focus over the last several years has been on building and growing individual giving programs. Devi graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with a double major in Economics and Spanish and has her MPA from New York University. She lived
in San Francisco, CA for over 15 years and moved back to her home state of Maryland in 2017. Outside of work, she loves to travel, explore the outdoors, and spend time with her
partner Robert and their dogs, Daisy and Dax.
Brent Croghan
Treasurer
Brent is a director and shareholder of Dembo Jones, P.C., a mid-size CPA firm with offices in Columbia and Rockville Maryland. With more than 18 years of experience in public accounting, Brent has significant experience in conducting and reporting on audits of non-profit organizations and preparing 990 tax returns. Brent is a highly trained auditor, whose experiences include successful audits of large and small not-for-profit entities throughout the Greater Washington Metropolitan Area. Brent holds a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Maryland, University College and is a Certified Public Accountant in Maryland and the District of Columbia. Brent resides in Frederick, Maryland with his wife, Jenny, and daughters Lillian and Lindsey. Brent’s favorite pastimes include watching his daughters swim and play tennis.
Nozipho Dube
Co-Secretary
Nozi is a Senior Auditor at Dembo Jones, P.C., a mid-size CPA firm with offices in Columbia and Rockville Maryland. Nozi has more than 7 years of experience in public accounting, conducting and reporting on audits of both for profit and non-profit organizations and preparing corporate, individual and 990 tax returns. Nozi holds a B.S. in Economics from Ave Maria University and a Master’s in Business Administration with a concentration in accounting from Loyola University, Maryland. Nozi is a Certified Public Accountant in Maryland and resides in Derwood. Nozi’s favorite pastimes include reading and volunteering with local charities that focus on providing services for underserved communities.
Annie Goulart
Co-Secretary
Annie is an attorney at Tyrell, Mason & Pillote, P.C., a three person law firm in North Bethesda, where she practices in the areas of Estates, Trusts, and Taxation. She also works at Dembo Jones, P.C. as an associate, preparing individual, trust, and estate tax returns. Annie holds a B.S. in Psychology from Towson University and a Juris Doctor from the University of Kansas School of Law, where she specialized in tax law. Annie is an active member of the Maryland State Bar Association, Bar Association of Montgomery County, Women’s Bar Association of Montgomery County, and the National Lawyers Guild. She is licensed to practice in California (inactive) and Maryland. In her free time, Annie enjoys exercise, traveling, playing rec league soccer, reading, and learning Russian. She is excited to be on the Board and looks forward to expanding restorative justice practices in Montgomery County and beyond.
